Are There Any Bungee Jumps in San Diego?

California is a great state to visit, but it’s even better for those seeking their next thrill. There are a variety of activities that will get your blood flowing and give you the rush you want. But what about if you’re in the San Diego area? Are there any bungee jumps in San Diego?

There are no bungee jumps in San Diego. However, one is nearby at the “Bridge to Nowhere” in the San Gabriel Mountains. It stands 120 feet high over the San Gabriel River and is operated by Bungee America.

Let’s take a look at some of the bungees that are close to San Diego. If you don’t feel like traveling out of the city, that’s fine! There are several other activities you can enjoy that are similar, providing you with that thrill you’re seeking.

Bungee jumping is legal in California, as DOSH (Division of Occupational Safety & Health) provides bungee jumping companies with a license to carry out the jumps. They have strict standards that any company needs to meet before they’re able to get a permit.

The Best Bungee Jumps Near San Diego

Since there are no bungee jumps in San Diego, you’ll need to travel to the nearest location. Below are the best bungee jumps near San Diego:

1. Bungee America- Bridge to Nowhere

The Bridge to Nowhere is one of the most popular bungee jumping destinations in the San Diego area. The company, Bungee America, that runs the jumps on this bridge, has been in business for over 18 years. You can choose from several options, such as a single jump, multiple jumps, or even an overnight camping trip to do a night jump.

This particular bridge is a 120-foot arch in the San Gabriel Mountains. It sits over the San Gabriel River and provides some of the most beautiful scenery, so you get an adrenaline rush coupled with a fantastic view of California.

Anyone bungee jumping at this location should know that the bridge is a five-mile hike from the road. The hike is relatively easy! However, if you sustain injuries on your way to or from the jump site or during the jump, there is a medical team at the bridge.

2. Six Flags Magic Mountain – Dive Devil Ride

There is a ride that’s similar to bungee jumping called the Dive Devil, and it’s at Six Flags Magic Mountain. It’s a harness swing where you’re strapped in either alone or with one to two other people. (The amount of people who can ride this at one time highly depends on the weight distribution.)

Everyone will be hooked in with steel harnesses and brought to the top of a 152-foot tower. Once you let go, you will freefall for about 50 feet before you swing down to the other side, reaching speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. You get the same freefall sensation and the sort of ‘rebound’ bounce, only slightly more subtle. But the adrenaline is sure to still be pumping!

3. Bungee Adventures in Sacramento

I’ve discovered that there are a ton of bungee options in Sacramento! All of these jumps are ran by the same company, which is Bungee Adventures. Rather than being a particular location, this company hosts a variety of different types. Jumpers can choose to bungee from:

  • Bridges
  • Cranes
  • Hot air balloons
  • Helicopters
  • Towers
  • Rocks
  • Trees

While this is a 500-mile drive from San Diego, it’s worth visiting! Make sure you’re free on a Sunday, as this is typically when the company hosts their events. Always check before you leave so you can book your ticket, as spots fill up quickly.

4. SkyJump Las Vegas

Las Vegas isn’t too far from San Diego and has a bungee there I personally love called the Skyjump. The Skyjump is more of a controlled style freefall… Think of it like a vertical zipline with a mix of bungee jumping, although you don’t bounce back up. This is done off the Stratosphere, which is an 855-foot tower at the end of the Las Vegas strip.

You’ll experience speeds of 40 to 45 miles per hour, and the jump takes around 17 seconds for you to reach the ground. Riders need to be over the age of 14 and weigh less than 265 lbs.

5. California Bungee

  • Driving Distance from San Diego: 461miles
  • Location: Los Gatos, California
  • Bungee Height: 140 feet to 180 feet
  • Type of Bungee: Head and feet first

California Bungee is another adventure sports company that is close to Los Angeles and runs a variety of jumps from May to September. They lease different places to be able to do this. They typically hold various events around different bridges near Los Angeles and other cities scattered around California. The heights range from 140 to 180 feet, depending on where they jump.

They have higher jumps available, but only for those with an experience certificate. If you don’t have this, no worries! If you are in the area for a bit, they have a full-week course you can take to get your certificate and become trained in the sport.

Please know, though, that no tandem jumps are allowed with California Bungee. Furthermore, you should call ahead to figure out the jumping schedule to better plan your jump.

6. Icarus Bungee (Closed Until Further Notice)

Icarus Bungee has organized both individual and group adventures at least once per month. However, at the moment (Summer of 2023), they are not organizing any new jumps. Although, it seems to be somewhat promising that they’ll open back up at some point, so I thought it was worth putting their information here.

Check their website to see if this status has changed before you book your trip!

Skydiving

There are plenty of skydiving options in San Diego! It’s a great experience, and you’ll get the best view of the city this way. There are a few skydiving companies you should check out if this is something you’re interested in:

If you’re hesitant to jump out of a plane, check out San Diego’s iFLY location. This is where you’ll go in a wind tunnel with an instructor and experience the freefall sensation without the height factor.

Hang Gliding

One of the best places near San Diego to hang gliding is over in Torrey Pines. I said I would share activities that were ‘in’ San Diego, but this is less than a 20-minute drive. Plus, I can promise you won’t regret going once you see the views!

Ziplining

Ziplining provides the same sort of sensation that bungee jumping does, just much less extreme. You still get that adrenaline rush, but it’s not as risky; you feel more secure on a zipline. Zip tours are much more relaxing, you get to enjoy the views as the wind calmy blows through your hair.

California has many great ziplines, and they have one of the longest in the country, too! You need to try the San Diego Zoo Safari Park zipline; its the best!

Rappelling

If you’ve never been rappelling, there’s no time like the present! It requires the same equipment as bungee jumping, such as cords and harnesses. This is where you descend a rock face or waterfall.

A few places you can do this in San Diego include Chillino Rock Climbing, Mesa Climbing Center, and Golden State Guiding.
