If you are anything like me, you travel a lot which is great, but it’s not always easy to find local activities that you enjoy, especially if you’re an adrenaline freak! Some areas of the USA tend to have a better selection of extreme sports than others. So, for the ones looking for a thrill, are there any bungee jumps in Pennsylvania?

There are no bungee jumps in Pennsylvania. There are a few locations you can jump from independently, but they are not regulated jumps. You can choose to travel to the X-TREME Skyflyer at Kings Dominion in Doswell, VA, or choose the Great Canadian Bungee in Quebec, Canada. 

While there are no commercial jumps or companies in this state, there are plenty of places to go jumping for experienced jumpers who feel comfortable doing it independently. So, I will share some of the best sites to go to, as well as some nearby activities for those who aren’t able to go on their own.

Can You Go Bungee Jumping in Pennsylvania Without a Company?

Even though there are no bungee companies that do tours in Pennsylvania, you can still jump yourself. However, you will need to have extensive knowledge of the bungee jumping equipment and how it works. Plus, it’s always ideal to go jumping with a group of people for safety reasons.

Renting or setting up with Adrenaline Dreams is an option, and you can see their sample equipment package on their website. This includes all the bungee cord equipment and harnesses.

What Are the Safety Regulations Regarding Bungee Jumping in Pennsylvania?

The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration has imposed several different safety regulations when it comes to bungee jumping in Pennsylvania. Anyone who wants to go bungee jumping within the state will need to attend in-class training to become certified.

The training courses will teach you how to use a harness correctly, as well as how to operate the bungee equipment.

Where Are The Best Places to Go Bungee Jumping in Pennsylvania?

There are several great places to go bungee jumping in Pennsylvania, namely all bridges. However, beware that during winter, you need to proceed with extra caution as the weather is prone to acute changes.

Moshannon Viaduct

Enter at your own risk as this bridge now states, “Any extracurricular activities on this bridge other than crossing at your own risk is not permitted and considered trespassing. Violators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law”. So this was once a location where bungee jumper enthusiasts would go and venture off too, but you need to be careful of the laws in place today.

The Moshannon Viaduct is 110 feet high and 770 feet long and is part of the 18.5-mile-long snowshoe rails to trails in Pennsylvania. However, the bridge can be a bit difficult to access, so you will need to search for a way up as the paths continuously change. There’s a great place to anchor your bungee cord so you can leap off of the structure. Plus, the scenery is beautiful!

Rubles Run Bridge

The Rubles Run bridge was built by the National Engineering & Contracting Company in Ohio. It’s a 5,387,547-pound steel structure built as part of the Mon-Fayette roadway. It stands around 229 feet, making it a great location to bungee jump, as it’s sturdy and provides some beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes.

Stoney Creek, aka Pennsylvania Railroad Old Bridge

The Stoney Creek Bridge is actually called the Pennsylvania Railroad Old Bridge and stretches over Standing Stone Creek. It’s a stone arch and a great place to go bungee jumping. Not to mention, it’s a piece of Pennsylvania’s history as this was built between 1848 and 1850.

Places Near Pennsylvania to Go Bungee Jumping

If you are not comfortable bungee jumping on your own, that’s fine! Plus, you want to make sure its legal anyway, so here are a handful of places you can travel to outside of Pennsylvania to bungee with a commercial company.

1. X-TREME Skyflyer- Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia

While this is not a classic-style bungee jump, it’s still something that will give you the same sensations that bungee jumping does. Plus, it has a lot of the same elements, such as cords, harnesses, and a free-falling period.

This X-treme Skyflyer ride will lift you 17 stories high up to a towering arch and then drop you so you swing just a few feet above the ground in less than a few seconds. Part of the adrenaline rush is the fall; the other is the illusion that you’re going to hit the pavement.

Then, you’ll swing back up to the other side until you come to the end of the ride, where the operators can then bring you safely back to the ground. However, riders will need to pay a separate fee as this ride is not included in the price of admission to the adventure park.

2. Great Canadian Bungee

For those of you who are willing to travel to Canada, you can take a road trip to the Great Canadian Bungee. It’s one of the most beautiful places on the east coast to go bungee jumping. This company was founded in 1990 and opened in 1991, so you’re guaranteed to jump with experienced professionals when you choose to bungee jump here.

When you get to the top, you’ll need to take a minute to look around as you’ll see the gorgeous rock faces, bluffs, and the bright blue lagoon. What’s more, you’ll get to choose whether your whole body or head is dipped into the water! If that’s not your thing, you can also opt for no water as well.

Now, for those of you who don’t want to go bungee jumping, there are plenty of places to sit and observe the jumpers. Or you can also take a ride on the nearby zipline.

3. Ocean City Slingshot

  • Location: Ocean City, MD 21842
  • Bungee Height: 220 feet
  • Type of Bungee: Reverse Bungee

There’s another ride that’s close to Pennsylvania called the Ocean City Slingshot, and it is located in Maryland. The Slingshot is a bungee type of ride. Again, it’s not a classic bungee, but it’s the closest thing you will get to a bungee jump this close to Pennsylvania, as it is considered to be a reverse bungee.

The term reverse bungee means that instead of jumping from a platform to bounce back up, you’re slung into the air, and then you return to the ground. If you haven’t seen this ride before, riders are strapped into a cage made of steel bars, and then they are shot 220 feet into the air.

As you’re flying through the sky, the cage you’re strapped in will roll backward, forward, upside down, and will bounce up and down, back and forth; it’s considered to be more intense than classic bungee jumping, and you can see why! So, you’re sure to get the thrill you are looking for.

However, again, you should be aware that the ride is not included in any of the basic ticket packages that are offered. So, you will need to pay an extra fee to ride this ride.

4. The Dare Devil Ride

One of my favorite rides in the world is the harness swing; however, the name of it differs depending on where you go. There is one located at the Six Flags location in Jackson Township, New Jersey, called the Dare Devil Dive. The ride will drop you 125 feet from a platform where you’ll fall through the air and swing back up the other side.

This ride allows you to share the thrill with one to two other people depending on the weight of everyone involved. Or, if you prefer to be a free bird, you can also take the ride on your own. I personally love both choices depending on the day! Sometimes, it’s liberating to go alone.

In my opinion, rides like these are a little better than bungee jumping because you can share them with someone, and it doesn’t strain your body as much. Not to mention, the ride is longer, and you don’t have to stay upside down.

Other Activities in Pennsylvania Like Bungee Jumping

You’re probably wondering what you can do if you don’t want to bungee jump on your own, and you don’t want to take a road trip; don’t worry! Pennsylvania has its fairshare of options when it comes to extreme sports. So, let’s check them out!

Whitewater Rafting

Ohiopyle offers some of the best whitewater rafting along the Youghiogheny River. The state park covers up to 20,000 acres and sits right along the Laurel Highlands Mountains. Oh man, are those mountains gorgeous or what!? It makes for a great whitewater rafting adventure, that’s for sure.

This location also offers some of the best rafting packages; there’s everything from a guided trip, escorted trips, and even raft rentals so that you can go on your own. Not to mention, they have something that fits everyone, no matter your age or experience level.

Spelunking

One often-forgotten about extreme sport is cave exploration. And let me tell you, one of my favorite places to explore caves is in Pennsylvania. It’s great for beginners as well because not all of them include squeezing yourself through a nearly impossible tunnel.

It’s best to do this with a tour company or with a group of people as this can be extremely dangerous, and if you make the wrong decision, this can result in injury or death. Rescue for caving is sometimes too difficult, so it’s best to go with someone who knows what they’re doing.

Rock Climbing

Pennsylvania has some really awesome rock climbing spots that you don’t want to miss out on, especially if rock climbing is your thing.

Several of the places include:

Livezey Rock at Wissahickon State Park: Over near Philadelphia, is a great place to climb. It’s only a quarter-mile hike and is ideal for bouldering and top rope climbing.

Mount Gretna at Governor Dick Nature Preserve: Another great place to boulder is here and provides plenty of climbing options. It’s suitable for climbers of any skill level who are looking to do anything from a quick climb to a full-day climb.

Birdsboro Climbing Quarry: This involves a 3.5-mile hike, so you can wrap your climb and hike into one trip. This has some of the best climbing in the entire state.

Boulder Point at Gifford Pinchot State Park: This is a great place for those who enjoy bouldering. You’ll also be able to spot some of the local wildlife, and it’s fit for climbers of all levels.

Are There Any New Bungee Jumps Coming To Pennsylvania?

As I write this article (Summer of 2023), I cannot find anything that points to a new bungee jump coming to Pennsylvania. However, keep in mind that’s not to say that there won’t be in the future. You just have to stay up to date and keep your eyes peeled for any announcements. But, for now, you will have to get certified to jump on your own or travel to a nearby state.
